Hyundai/Kia 2.0 and 2.4 Theta II: common problems by mileage
The Theta II is the Hyundai-Kia four-cylinder petrol engine family in 2.0 and 2.4 litres, with port injection (MPI), direct injection (GDI) or a turbo (T-GDI), used from 2009 in the Sonata, Optima, Santa Fe, Sorento, Sportage and ix35. Many GDI and turbo engines were recalled in the US, Canada and Korea for connecting-rod bearing failure; Hyundai and Kia added a knock-sensor software update (KSDS) that warns the driver, and extended the engine warranty in several markets.

Problems at a glance
| Problem | Typical mileage |
|---|---|
| Connecting-rod bearing failure high severity | 50,000–200,000 km 30,000–125,000 miles |
| Carbon build-up on the intake valves (GDI) medium severity | 80,000–180,000 km 50,000–110,000 miles |
Connecting-rod bearing failure
Symptoms
- Knocking from the bottom end that rises with rpm
- Oil pressure warning and engine warning light
- Loss of power or stalling while driving
- KSDS warning on updated cars (manufacturer code P1326)
Fault codes
Usually no generic fault code: go by the symptoms and the tests below.
Why it happens
On many GDI and turbo engines, machining debris left in the crankshaft oil passages restricted the oil supply to the con-rod bearings, which then wear and spin. A low oil level makes it worse.
How to confirm it
- Check the recall and KSDS software status by VIN.
- Oil pressure test with a gauge when hot; inspect the oil filter for bearing material.
- Listen for a bottom-end knock. KSDS stores P1326 when the knock sensor detects bearing vibration.
The fix
Short or long engine replacement under the recall or extended warranty where it applies. A bearing-only repair rarely lasts if the crankshaft is damaged.
Carbon build-up on the intake valves (GDI)
Symptoms
- Misfire when cold and rough idle
- Hesitation and loss of power
- Misfire codes on one or more cylinders
Fault codes
Why it happens
With direct injection no fuel washes over the intake valves, so oil vapour from the crankcase breather bakes onto them.
How to confirm it
- Borescope the intake valves.
- Compression test to rule out mechanical faults.
- Check the crankcase breather (PCV) system.
The fix
Walnut-shell blasting or chemical cleaning of the intake valves, and a new PCV valve if it is faulty.

Theta II 2.0/2.4: questions and answers
What are the most common problems with the Theta II 2.0/2.4?
The most reported are connecting-rod bearing failure; carbon build-up on the intake valves (GDI). Each one is described below with its symptoms, fault codes, how to confirm it and the usual fix.
At what mileage does the Theta II 2.0/2.4 have connecting-rod bearing failure?
Typically between 50,000–200,000 km (30,000–125,000 miles), depending on use and maintenance. On many GDI and turbo engines, machining debris left in the crankshaft oil passages restricted the oil supply to the con-rod bearings, which then wear and spin. A low oil level makes it worse.
At what mileage does the Theta II 2.0/2.4 have carbon build-up on the intake valves (GDI)?
Typically between 80,000–180,000 km (50,000–110,000 miles), depending on use and maintenance. With direct injection no fuel washes over the intake valves, so oil vapour from the crankcase breather bakes onto them.
Which cars have the Theta II 2.0/2.4 engine?
Hyundai: Sonata (YF, LF), Santa Fe (CM, DM), ix35 (2.0), Tucson (2.4, mainly North America). Kia: Optima (TF, JF), Sorento (XM, UM), Sportage (SL 2.0, QL 2.4).
