PSA/Stellantis 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech (EB): common problems by mileage

The PureTech is the three-cylinder petrol engine Peugeot and Citroën introduced in 2012, now used across Stellantis brands. The 1.2 comes with or without a turbo. Its timing belt runs in the engine oil to reduce friction. Belt degradation and oil consumption are the problems every workshop sees; Stellantis shortened the belt interval and extended warranty cover in many countries.

Timing belt breaking down in the oil

Symptoms

  • Oil pressure warning, first at hot idle
  • Black flakes or rubber particles in the oil
  • Hard brake pedal or less brake assistance
  • Camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault or the belt jumping

Fault codes

Why it happens

The belt runs in the oil. Wrong oil, fuel dilution and long intervals make the belt material swell and shed particles. They block the oil pump strainer (low oil pressure) and the oil feed of the brake vacuum pump, and a degraded belt can jump teeth.

How to confirm it

  1. Measure the belt width with the manufacturer's gauge and compare it with the limit in the service information.
  2. Check the oil for particles and measure oil pressure with a gauge.
  3. If there are particles or low pressure, remove the sump and inspect the pickup strainer.
  4. Check the vacuum at the brake servo.

The fix

New belt kit, sump and strainer cleaned (often a new strainer and vacuum pump), fresh oil to the exact PSA specification. Stellantis reduced the belt interval to 100,000 km or 6 years on most engines.

Prevention

Only the oil specification listed for the engine, shorter oil changes, and a belt check at every service on high-mileage or short-trip cars.

High oil consumption

Symptoms

  • Oil level dropping fast between services
  • Misfire and fouled plugs
  • Blue smoke on start or under load
  • Low oil warnings

Fault codes

Why it happens

Carbon sticks the piston rings, and oil gets past them into the combustion chambers. It is linked to the same oil and driving conditions that wear the belt.

How to confirm it

  1. Oil consumption test over 1,000 km.
  2. Compression and leak-down tests; borescope the pistons for carbon.
  3. Ask the dealer about the manufacturer's programme for the car's VIN.

The fix

Pistons and rings or a short engine, often under the manufacturer's extended cover depending on age and service history. Check the belt at the same time.

1.2 PureTech: questions and answers

What are the most common problems with the 1.2 PureTech?

The most reported are timing belt breaking down in the oil; high oil consumption. Each one is described below with its symptoms, fault codes, how to confirm it and the usual fix.

At what mileage does the 1.2 PureTech have timing belt breaking down in the oil?

Typically between 60,000–150,000 km (35,000–95,000 miles), depending on use and maintenance. The belt runs in the oil. Wrong oil, fuel dilution and long intervals make the belt material swell and shed particles.
