Tests performed

  1. Turbo oil feed banjo bolt removedFilter screen in the banjo bolt almost completely blocked with carbon
  2. Injector wells inspected, soapy water at idleBlack carbon crust and bubbles around injector no. 3
  3. Sump removedOil pickup strainer half blocked with carbon flakes

Solution

Root cause

Turbo bearings failed from oil starvation: carbon from a leaking injector washer got into the oil and blocked the turbo oil feed filter and the sump strainer.

Repair

New turbo with the updated oil feed pipe kit, sump and pickup strainer cleaned, oil cooler flushed, new oil and filter. Injector no. 3 removed, seat cleaned, new washer and clamp bolt torqued to specification. Oil cleaned out of the intercooler.

Parts

Turbo, oil feed pipe kit, injector washer and bolt, gaskets, oil and filter

Lesson learned

On this engine a new turbo alone fails again within weeks if the carbon source (the injector washer) and the blocked oil feed are not fixed.

Training case: the usual fix for this fault, not a confirmed repair on a specific car.
