SensorsSeverity Low: usually safe to drive

P0111Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The intake air temperature sensor reading is plausible electrically, but doesn't match the other temperatures or doesn't change as expected while the engine warms up. The ECU uses intake air temperature to correct fuelling and ignition timing.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Usually little effect on driving
  • Possibly harder starting or slightly higher fuel use

Common causes

  • Sensor reading drifted
  • Sensor mounted in a hot spot or affected by heat soak
  • Poor connection adding resistance

What to check first

  1. After an overnight cold soak IAT and coolant temperature should be within a few degrees
  2. Compare the reading with an IR thermometer at the intake
  3. Measure the sensor resistance against the table
Can I drive with P0111? Usually yes. P0111 rarely affects how the car drives, but it keeps the check engine light on and can fail an emissions test.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
