P0219Engine Overspeed Condition
What it means
The engine speed went above the maximum allowed. On manual cars this usually comes from a missed gear; on diesels it can be a runaway.
Symptoms
- Engine over-revved (often after a missed gear change)
- Possible valve damage on high mileage engines
Common causes
- Missed gear change (shifting into a lower gear at speed)
- Diesel runaway: engine burning its own oil (turbo seal)
- Faulty crank speed signal
What to check first
- Ask the driver what happened when it was set
- Check for oil in the intake on diesels
- Run a compression test if valve damage is suspected
Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
