Engine mechanicalSeverity High: diagnose before driving on

P0521Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Range/Performance

What it means

The oil pressure sensor signal is electrically possible, but it doesn't make sense compared with other sensors or with what the engine is doing. The oil pressure sensor measures the engine oil pressure.

Symptoms

  • Oil pressure warning light
  • Possibly engine noise (ticking or knocking)
  • Reduced power on some engines

Common causes

  • Real low oil pressure (oil level, worn pump or bearings)
  • Faulty sensor
  • Wrong oil grade

What to check first

  1. Check the oil level first
  2. Measure oil pressure with a mechanical gauge
  3. Compare the gauge with the sensor reading
Can I drive with P0521? Not recommended. P0521 can lead to stalling, limp mode or engine damage; diagnose it before driving further.
