FuelSeverity High: diagnose before driving on

P0088Fuel Rail/System Pressure – Too High

What it means

The rail pressure is above what the ECU asked for. On common rail diesels the pressure control valve can't bleed off pressure, or the metering valve lets too much fuel in.

Symptoms

  • Engine cuts out or goes into limp mode
  • Loud diesel knock
  • Hard to start

Common causes

  • Pressure control valve stuck closed
  • Metering (inlet) valve stuck open
  • Faulty rail pressure sensor reading too high
  • Blocked fuel return

What to check first

  1. Compare requested and actual rail pressure and the regulator duty cycles
  2. Check the rail pressure sensor signal against the expected voltage
  3. Check the return line for restrictions
Can I drive with P0088? Not recommended. P0088 can lead to stalling, limp mode or engine damage; diagnose it before driving further.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
