FuelSeverity High: diagnose before driving on

P0087Fuel Rail/System Pressure – Too Low

What it means

The fuel pressure the ECU measures in the rail is well below the pressure it asked for. The engine may not start, may stall, or goes into limp mode to protect itself.

Symptoms

  • Long cranking or no start
  • Loss of power and limp mode under load
  • Stalling, especially when hot or after a long run

Common causes

  • Clogged fuel filter or air entering on the low-pressure side
  • Weak lift (tank) pump or blocked pick-up
  • Sticking metering valve or pressure regulator
  • Worn high-pressure pump or an injector with too much leak-off

What to check first

  1. Compare requested and actual rail pressure while cranking and under load
  2. Fit a clear line before the filter and look for air bubbles
  3. Run an injector leak-off test before blaming the pump
Can I drive with P0087? Not recommended. P0087 can lead to stalling, limp mode or engine damage; diagnose it before driving further.
Practise it: Rail pressure regulator (diesel) in the engine simulator shows this fault in live data, tests and on the scope.Open in the simulator
