FuelSeverity Low: usually safe to drive

P0181Fuel Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The fuel temperature sensor reading is plausible electrically, but doesn't match the other temperatures or doesn't change as expected while the engine warms up. The ECU uses fuel temperature to correct the injected quantity (fuel gets thinner when hot).

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Possibly slightly reduced power or harder hot starts

Common causes

  • Sensor drifting
  • Fuel really overheating (blocked return, cooler fault)
  • Poor connection

What to check first

  1. After a cold soak, fuel temperature should be close to the air temperature
  2. Measure the sensor resistance against the table
  3. Check the fuel cooler and return line on diesels
Can I drive with P0181? Usually yes. P0181 rarely affects how the car drives, but it keeps the check engine light on and can fail an emissions test.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
