EmissionsSeverity Medium: diagnose soon

P0156O2 Sensor Circuit (bank 2 sensor 2)

What it means

The ECU sees an electrical fault in the oxygen sensor circuit, bank 2 sensor 2. The downstream sensor (after the catalyst) is mainly used to check how well the catalyst works.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Usually no change in how the car drives
  • Catalyst monitor may not complete

Common causes

  • Open or shorted signal or reference wire
  • Corroded connector (often from exhaust heat or water)
  • Failed oxygen sensor
  • Exhaust leak near the sensor

What to check first

  1. Graph the sensor voltage at 2,500 rpm: a narrowband sensor should switch between about 0.1 and 0.9 V
  2. Check the wiring where it runs near the exhaust
  3. Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the sensor
Can I drive with P0156? Usually yes for a short distance, but performance or economy may suffer and the fault can get worse. Diagnose it soon.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
