EmissionsSeverity Low: usually safe to drive

P0410Secondary Air Injection System

What it means

The secondary air system (which blows fresh air into the exhaust after a cold start to heat the catalyst) is not working as expected.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Sometimes a whining or roaring noise from the air pump after a cold start
  • Usually no change in how the car drives

Common causes

  • Failed air pump (often water damage)
  • Stuck combination (check) valve
  • Blocked air passages in the head
  • Faulty air pump relay

What to check first

  1. Command the pump and listen; check its fuse and relay
  2. Check the combination valve for exhaust soot or water
  3. Watch the upstream oxygen sensor go lean when the system runs
Can I drive with P0410? Usually yes. P0410 rarely affects how the car drives, but it keeps the check engine light on and can fail an emissions test.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
