EmissionsSeverity Low: usually safe to drive

P0161O2 Sensor Heater Circuit (bank 2 sensor 2)

What it means

The heater inside the oxygen sensor bank 2 sensor 2 is not drawing the expected current. Without it the sensor takes longer to work after a cold start. The downstream sensor (after the catalyst) is mainly used to check how well the catalyst works.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Usually no change in how the car drives
  • Catalyst monitor may not complete

Common causes

  • Open heater element inside the sensor
  • Blown fuse or open heater supply
  • Open ground or ECU heater control circuit
  • Corroded connector

What to check first

  1. Measure the heater resistance (typically 3–15 Ω, check the specification)
  2. Check the 12 V supply with the key on
  3. Check the heater control (ground) side from the ECU
Can I drive with P0161? Usually yes. P0161 rarely affects how the car drives, but it keeps the check engine light on and can fail an emissions test.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
