EmissionsSeverity Medium: diagnose soon

P0545Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

What it means

The exhaust gas temperature sensor signal voltage is too low. For this type of sensor that means the ECU sees an impossibly high temperature, usually because the signal wire is shorted to ground. The ECU uses exhaust temperature to protect the turbo and catalyst and to control DPF regeneration.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Possibly limp mode or DPF regeneration not running

Common causes

  • Signal wire shorted to ground
  • Sensor shorted internally
  • Water in the connector

What to check first

  1. Live data usually shows a very high temperature (130 °C or more) with a cold engine
  2. Unplug the sensor: the reading should drop to about −40 °C
  3. Check the harness for chafing to ground
Can I drive with P0545? Usually yes for a short distance, but performance or economy may suffer and the fault can get worse. Diagnose it soon.
