Air intakeSeverity High: diagnose before driving on

P0234Turbocharger/Supercharger "A" Overboost Condition

What it means

Actual boost pressure went above the requested value by more than allowed. The ECU cuts power to protect the engine.

Symptoms

  • Sudden loss of power (limp mode) under hard acceleration
  • Surge of power before the cut
  • Check engine light

Common causes

  • Sticking variable vanes (VGT) or wastegate stuck closed
  • Faulty boost control solenoid or actuator
  • Split vacuum line to the actuator
  • Boost pressure sensor reading wrong

What to check first

  1. Compare requested and actual boost on a road test
  2. Run the actuator test and watch the vanes or wastegate move
  3. Check vacuum lines and the boost sensor reading at key-on (should equal baro)
Can I drive with P0234? Not recommended. P0234 can lead to stalling, limp mode or engine damage; diagnose it before driving further.

Generic OBD-II meaning. Manufacturer-specific meanings and checks can differ; always check the service information for the car.
